Laos-Luang Prabang

The old capital of Laos is a haven of tranquility, at least in the low season. More than 30 temples inside and outside the city are protected by UNESCO. The old quarter looks very french colonial and wandering around sets you back in time. Thanks to France for the yummy baguettes and coffee they left behind... ;-)

We got out of bed at 5.30 to witness the alms giving (collecting of offerings of the local monks). It is impressive how quiet, respectful and serene this daily ritual is held.

Laos-Phonsavan

One of the most heavily bombed areas of the country during the sectret war, Phonsavan also has to offer one of the most mysterious sites: the plain of jars.
So far, noone can really explain the use of these thousands of stone jars that you can find almost everywhere around the city. Most likely though, they were used as funeral urns and date back to the Stone Age. Exploring by motorbike was quite a challenge, but also rewarding: beautiful sceneries and lovely people. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of clearing to be done...

Laos-Buddha Park

Located next to the Thai border, one hour away from Vientiane, Xieng Khuan makes an ideal short trip from the capital. It was created in the 50's in order to merge Hindu and Buddhist iconography. The result is quite impressive.

Laos-Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng, until recently known as party and drug heaven, has luckily turned back to its original calm. The surrounding landscape with its beautiful limestone hills and cliffs can be nicely discovered while kayaking or tubing. We did both and had a great deal of fun!
